Buy Fonts - Purchasing Custom Fonts is the Secret to Great Graphics
By James Blakely
Many indie designers create very professional graphics. They are very clean and concise. Before I started doing graphics full time I was an indie designer. I created web sites, logos, designs, t-shirts, and anything and everything that could fill my portfolio and my empty wallet.

I had to learn how to make graphics that were just as good as large design firms were creating. I knew I had enough talent I just didn't have the experience. I had to find the secrets to good design. I had to see what I could get away with and what I couldn't.

I decided to perform experiments with my work. I wanted to see from my clients what was frivolous and what was needed. I found that fonts were integral for the customer. I would create 3 mock ups of the design with slight color and design changes, but would use a normal font, a free font from the internet, and one I had purchased. It amazed me that clients always would choose the unique font that I had bought.

I couldn't understand why the fonts meant so much to the design. I finally realized that fonts were the focal point of my designs. It is what your eyes are drawn to. You are encouraged to read the words, and this makes people scrutinize the type style.

Custom fonts were unique fonts. People had not associated brand names to the fonts style yet. When I had used common fonts people psychologically associated the fonts with the a brand. They would judge the design I had created for them on there brand preference. People also wanted a unique design and a common font destroyed the design.

I also discovered that buying a font allowed me to push designs quicker with less rework. I knew from the beginning I needed to buy fonts. Custom and unique fonts sold the graphics and logos immediately. My time spent designing fell dramatically.

You will discover that consumers of your products will do the same. It gives your product, whatever it is, the feeling of individuality. People will associate only your name or product with your custom fonts.

The best resources for fonts are Fonts.com and ITCFonts.com. They have huge font libraries that are virtually untapped by commercial brands.

You need to buy fonts for the designs and pass that expense on to the customer. I never had a band or a company refuse a small charge for purchasing fonts. I always told them that the impact was 100% greater for the specific font I had purchased. It also allows you to buy fonts, and build a nice font library of your own.
