Digital Pictures to Keep your Local Band Web Site Fresh - At the Show
By James Blakely
There are plenty of points of interest that need to be documented by your pictures at shows. Most of the pictures from events that I see are just shots of individual band members performing. You do want shots of the band, but you want to document the performance.

Before we talk about what we want to shoot, we need to look at how to take an interesting photo. Pictures document time. Photography is a medium that visually tells a story of an event. When we take photographs we want to capture the essence of that event. Our pictures need to convey the emotions and activities of your performance.

When you take photos you need to let the subject run off the sides. Don't frame a subject with plenty of negative space around them. Get closer. Fill the entire photograph with your intended subject.

Lets look at some examples of good subjects for our shots.
  • The Outside of the Venue - This tells the viewer where the event took place. Remember we are documenting our event.
  • The Inside of the Venue - Make a picture of the inside of venue empty while you are setting up.
  • The Crowd - Show your viewer how much fun your audience has at the show. Shoot the audience mid performance. People would rather see photos of the mass crowd than a couple of individual pictures family reunion style.
There is plenty of compelling subject matter at a performance. Look for situations that would capture the moment.

Now that you have a camera, lets look at our regular band photos for your web site.
