Domain Names
By James Blakely
Domain names are an important aspect of your web site. This sites domain name is www.golistenlive.net. It is literally your web sites address.

Domain names need to be as short as possible. You should try not to have more than 15 characters in your domain name. The longer the domain name, the easier it is to mistype. You want your potential viewers to easily get to your web site. They will most likely hear your address while you are performing. It needs to be memorable. You should be able to say it in concert without having to spell it out.

If you can get yourbandname.com, that would be the best address. Most bands will find that their band name is not available. You can get the .net version of your band name. I would suggest staying away from .org, .cc, .info, and .biz. These are not recognized very well by your audience. I would try to stick to .com or .net.

If yourbandname.com and yourbandname.net are taken, you can also get a domain name that has keywords in it. You can add words that would be included in a search engine search for your band. Words like band, local, rock, rap, drunk, religious, or noisy could all be keywords that a person who is looking for your band online would include in a search.

Here is an example. You finally created the perfect name for your band. All your members agree that Example personifies the music of your band. You decide to get a domain name, but example.com and example.net are taken. You also find that Exampleband.com and .net are taken. You realize that your mixture of speed metal and bubble gum pop is very unique. What words can you add to make people think Pantera meets Britney Spears. The other bands that are tearing up the underground with the same style are calling it poptal. First inclination should be to register poptal.com or .net. If those are gone then try Example-poptal.com or .net. Search engines will use your domain name for user searches. If I search for poptal in your state, you will be pretty high in the listings (unless there are a million poptal domains).

You need to research what your audience is searching for. What are the words that they will most likely associate with your band.

Make sure that your domain is easy to spell. If it is difficult to spell, you will lose a lot of users to another web site. Some good resources are:

Dotster.com to register domain names.
Nameboy.com creates a list of names that are a good match to what you want.
Deleteddomains.com lets you see names that have been placed on hold or expired. You can find some gems people are just letting slip away.
Network Solutions Whois lets you see who own all domains and when they will expire.
