Local Bands and Local Music - How Can My Band Compete?
By James Blakely
There are a lot of local bands out there. All of them have the dream of getting that coveted major label contract. No matter what city you live in, there is plenty of local music to choose from. You believe your local music is worthy of radio play, but with so many local bands how can you compete?

The number one way to get your local music noticed is to play gigs. Play gigs at every local club and venue that will let you. You want to play all over town. If you play the south side of town on Friday, play the north side on Saturday. Cover as much ground as possible. If you play the same local club every Saturday night you will have the same local fans.

Labels want to sign local bands with a large fan base. Your fans are consumers of your independent music. Labels want local bands who have potential revenue from record sales.

Independent labels can be an important step for local bands. Independent labels will show you the business in a friendly environment. Indie labels know how to market independent music and can ease some of your economic burden.

Marketing your music locally can get extra bodies to your next show. Stickers, posters, t-shirts, and other promotional materials keep your name out there. Name recognition is a powerful thing. It will make your local music have more credibility. Audiences will listen longer and pay more to see you if they have heard of your band.

Professionalism about your music is key. You are working to make music a lifelong career choice. It should be handled like any other job. Show up to gigs and meetings on time. Return all mail, e-mails, and phone calls you get about your music. People who can help you make a living working with local bands. Let them know that you are able to keep commitments.

Promoting independent music takes work. The more work you put in to your local music, the greater your chances are of getting that record contract. No matter what you do remember to get your music and your name out there.
