Part 3: Shapes

Before you can really start any design, you need to define a space. Painters do this when they build their canvas. Starting a design is always the hardest part. You may have all these ideas that are just waiting to come out, but no where to start. A thousand mile journey starts with just a single step. This single step always helps a designer get going without much thought.

Before you choose your shape, decide what the purpose of the design will be. In this context it's a logo. It needs to be compact and small. Most common shapes are a square, circle, and oval. Rectangles are used, but be sure not to elongate the rectangle too much. Remember the design should look good in a compact space. You don't want a logo that is really tall or really wide. Tall or wide logos will not work in all aspects. People who want to advertise your band might manipulate your logo to fit their needs, or not even use it at all!

If you have a long name try to break it up to fit a compact area. You can wrap it around a circle. If your feeling adventurous you can exclude your name all together. Golistenlive.net's logo is a treble clef with rotating arrows. The text always accompanies the logo, but is not in the actual graphic.

Ovals are all the rage right now. They seem to have a more "Modern" feel. Ford and Ask.com have good examples of oval logos.

Orbitals, objects that appear to orbit an object, add motion to a logo. Expedia's logo is an example of both a logo without text and an orbital. They have two versions of their logo they can use; one with their name, and one without.

Whatever shape you choose you should remember that special shapes like skulls and guitars need a dye cut. A dye cut is when a printer has to make a custom cut of your paper or sticker. Dye cuts are very expensive and should be avoided unless you have the funding.

Now you need to consider reproduction. Most bands won't bank roll a printing run for flyers and mailers. Thats why we need to have a black and white version of the logo for photocopies.
