Welcome friends and fellow musicians.
This being my first column for Go Listen Live I'd like to touch on a subject that's near and dear to my heart...Perseverance!
You know the old adage of "Good things come to those who wait."
...Well, let me dispel that rumor and amend it to -"Good things come to those who persevere!"
...The waiting is just a by-product of our feverish efforts to create that #1 song!
This is the name of the game - "Perseverance".
That, in our musical circles means to pursue your dreams despite ALL odds and numerous rejections and in the face of ALL adversity to continue to create!
The facts are - 90%-95% of us will NEVER land that big record deal
...And those that do, 95% will only sell 700 CD's or less!!!
That means that out of the 100% of those that DO get a major record deal and are hung from the corporate "meat-hooks",only 5% make any money!
Now have faith my friend
...With all the really cool Indie Labels and the ability to take the "do-it yourself" approach, not having a record deal is really no big deal!!
Thank God that musicians are not professional gamblers
...We'd all be wearing barrels and standing on street corners with signs that say-"Will work for music!"
...But yet we persevere
...Chasing the brass ring whatever you want to call it
...You have got to remember that its not the destination, but the fun you have in your journey!
Now I know you must be wondering "What the hell is he trying to say?"
...Perseverance my friend, perseverance
...Perseverance pays off in the end
...You just have got to have the testicular fortitude to stay the course!
How many times have you heard the stories "Been doing this for years and when I was ready to quit, it happened."
...Success or something that resembles success.
I can personally attest to this!
After pursuing a musical career for 20 something odd years I had come to the conclusion that I had better put a time limit on my effort of 2 more years
...Then "BOOM"...The Earth split, the Heavens rained down...And we negotiated a 2 CD deal with a European Record company!
Perseverance my friend, perseverance!
Dare to dream!
Enjoy the journey!
And NEVER, EVER give up the ghost!
Remember that a dream will always remain a dream unless you pursue it to the fullest
Then dreams become realities!!
