How To Create a Band
Part 5: Practices and Jam Sessions
By James Blakely
Practice makes perfect. That is so true when it comes to bands and music. Bands need to practice to get together. All mistakes can be hashed out of songs with lots of practice.

I always say that band practice is like exercise. It needs to be done at least three times a week. You need to have a rigorous schedule for practice. It creates good habits for all band members to not make plans during practice. If practice is every Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday then all members block that time off and they have less of a chance to forget it.

Every band I have been in has had to have regular practice for at least 4 months before we could play live. It takes a while to work out the kinks. You don't want to miss a beat or lyric while in front of a crowd.

Every so often it is good to just have a jam session with the band. Jam sessions are not like regular practices. They are more loose. You are able to play whatever you can agree on. You get burned out on the same 10 song play list all the time so it becomes necessary to just play. Run through some covers and make up some new songs. It lets the band unwind a little.

It also lets you explore new songs. A lot of songs are created from jam sessions.

Once you feel courageous enough to play in public, you need to find a gig.
