T-Shirts - Moving Billboards for Your Band
By James Blakely
T-shirts have a special place in all concert goer's hearts. We all remember that dingy concert tee that we hated to finally toss. They were our message to the world about our music. You can actually get t-shirts for your band a lot less than you think. You can also sell them for cost or a little above and have them pay for themselves. You sell your demos at shows why not peddle your t-shirts too.

T-shirt design is much easier than sticker creation. You have a much larger area to work with.

T-shirt design is not much different then flyer design. The design space is about the same size. If you've made flyers then you should be able to create a t-shirt design. Here are some tips to help you get the most of your shirts.
  • Don't go crazy with colors - Try to make your design 1 to 2 colors. Use the garment color as a color. Make your colors generic like blue, black, and white (white being the color of the garment).
  • Try to stay away from intricate artwork like photos - You can use band photos, but I suggest trying to leverage your band name. Just a well placed logo can look nicer then a big photo of the band.
  • Print on one area of the shirt - Use the front or back of a t-shirt. If you use both the printing fees will be much greater.
  • Incorporate your web address in your design - Tell the t-shirt audience where they can get more information.
T-shirts have real value. People buy clothing and believe that shirts are not cheap. Since we are buying quite a few we can get our cost down to about $5 - $7 a shirt. Thats not bad considering a $10 t-shirt is considered a steal by most consumers. Add a recognized brand to it and they are willing to pay $20 - $30. At this price you can give a couple away and make some loyal fans.

If your band has t-shirts, it adds credibility to your band. You let everyone that has a shirt promote your band. I don't know how many times people ask me about my shirts.

Here is a list of printers I found on the web. I have never used any of these printers, so shop around for the best fit for your needs.
