Web Design - Inbound Links
By James Blakely
Text and links were the original web. The web is built off of links. Links are extremely important in the internet business. Your incoming and outgoing links can make or break your site.

Links allow people to surf the web. Surfing is just following links from site to site. You could start out looking at car dealers, and end up reading the bible.

Have you ever considered how people find your site? If they don't directly type in the address then they click a link. These inbound links are your little ads. They are out there on the net louring people to your site. Do you know how many inbound links your site has? You can check them out at domainjunkies.com

Search engines use link popularity to gauge how important your site is. The more link popularity your site has, the higher in search engine results it will be. Having good search engine traffic is nice, but all those links out there will bring you a nice amount of traffic.

There are plenty of sites out there for local bands to get links. We offer links for our bands. Spiders are constantly crawling our site giving those bands good link popularity. It also helps search engine spiders find your site without you having to submit to them. There are also link partner sites like Links4Trade.

The most important places to get free links for local bands are:
  • Dmoz.org - Dmoz is a free directory where a lot of search engines get their crawling data. AOL Search, Ask Jeeves, Google, Hot Bot, and a lot others. This link is very crucial.
  • Google - Google is a great engine to be in. Totally free and will bring you good traffic. If you get a link in the Dmoz then you won't have to submit your site to google. Yahoo and other searches are powered by google.
  • Yahoo - Yahoo is one of the oldest directories on the web. Yahoo get a lot of visitors. Yahoo is an incredible push for your site when you are include in their directory. Make sure you add your site to yahoo before you start selling anything. They will accept it for free only if it is nonprofit. Get in Yahoo then sell your cds.
If you can get links in these engines your going to get a lot of click through traffic. They can give you a lot of free exposure. All of the other engines will pick up on these links and add your site. Remember to submit your site to these engines after you are finished (but before you add a shopping cart). If you send these sites to your site and its under construction they will not include you. It might hurt your chances of getting in any time soon. Wait to submit after you feel the site is fully functional for visitors.
