Web Design - Outbound Links
By James Blakely
Links are great if they are comming into your site, but how do you link away from your site? This is actually an important question. Where you are linking is very important to search engines. I would consider a link off your site like gold. Don't just link to anyone.

You should follow a few rules about external linking.
  • Try to have most of your links point to sites that are considered more important then yours. Link to company sites that get a lot of traffic. Their prestige will rub off on your site.

  • Do not create a links page. Intermittently link to other sites through yours. Links pages can hurt your search engine position. Find a page on your site where the link will incorporate with the content.

  • Do not Link to the same site on every page. You should only link to an external site sparingly.

  • If you put a link to a smaller web site on your pages, get them to place one to yours. This is called reciprocal linking. You were kind enough to give them a link. The least they can do is return the favor. Send the webmaster a polite email to the webmaster asking for a link to your site. Put a link in the email to the page were you link to them. Don't expect monster sites to reply. CNN will probably not give you the time of day let alone a link.

  • Trade reciprocal links with all of your friend's bands. You want to make sure that you are linking to sites that are in your subject matter. This is called themes. Search engines use themes to help searchers fin on topic links. If you help search engines categorize your site correctly, you will receive traffic that will want to stay.

If you follow these rules your site should receive good traffic. Search engines should be ushering visitors your way, and your reciprocal link partners should be provide a good click through amount also. Just remember that sites are alway popping up and disappearing. Stay on top of getting quality reciprocal link partners.
